Milestone Birthdays

A milestone birthday has a particular difficulty. The guest list spans decades of a life, which means colleagues, old friends, family, and neighbours all arrive at the same room with nothing in common except the person being celebrated.

Left alone, that room divides into groups who already know each other. The evening is pleasant and slightly disappointing.

Why an activity helps

A shared activity is the most reliable way to mix a guest list that has no natural overlap. It gives people something to stand around, comment on, and be lightly competitive about, none of which requires them to have anything else in common.

Golf indoors is especially good for this. Nobody needs skill. A guest who has never held a club produces the most entertaining swing of the night and is immediately part of things.

Range of ages

A room where several generations are present needs to work for all of them. That means somewhere to sit for people who would rather sit, comfortable volume levels, and an activity that is optional rather than compulsory.
