A Private Golf Club Concept for East Cobb

The private golf club is one of the most recognizable institutions in American life, and one of the least revised. The template has been stable for a century: land, a course, a clubhouse, and a membership structure inherited largely intact from an earlier era.

Enclave starts from a different set of assumptions.

What a private club is actually for

Strip away the format and a private club provides three things: a reliable place to play, a room where you are known, and a group of people you keep encountering.

None of those three requires a hundred acres. They require the game to be available, the hospitality to be consistent, and the membership to be built with care.

The indoor argument

An indoor club changes the economics and, more importantly, the experience. Play becomes available year-round and at hours a course cannot serve. The footprint is small enough that every room can be finished properly rather than budget being spread thin across a large building.

And because the environment is fully controlled, the club can be designed rather than merely maintained. Light, sound, materials, and pace all become choices.

Hospitality as the center

In a traditional club, the clubhouse supports the course. Here, the relationship is more balanced. Golf is the reason to arrive and the hospitality is a substantial part of why the evening continues.

That places real demands on the operation. Food and drink have to be good enough to stand on their own. Service has to be attentive without hovering. The room has to work as well for two people at seven as for eight at nine.

Membership shaped for atmosphere

Membership at Enclave is being designed to preserve the experience rather than to maximise volume. A club filled deliberately develops a culture. A club filled quickly develops a customer base.

Program details are still being finalized, and it would be premature to describe them here. What is settled is the intent: a considered membership, a private setting, and an environment built for people who care where they spend their time.

Not everything worth belonging to is open to everyone.
