The Anatomy of the Perfect Indoor Golf Bay
Put a launch monitor, projector and impact screen in a room and technically you have a golf simulator.
Put a launch monitor, projector and impact screen in a room and technically you have a golf simulator.
Creating a great golf bay is considerably harder.
The best simulator spaces get several things right simultaneously.
Space
A golfer shouldn't feel as though the room is closing around the swing.
Bay width, ceiling height and the distance between the player and screen all affect comfort. Enough room also needs to remain for other players and guests without placing them in the golfer's space.
Technology
Accuracy matters.
A player needs confidence that the shot on the screen reflects the shot that was actually struck.
For serious golfers, club and ball information can make practice dramatically more useful. For recreational players, technology should be intuitive enough that it never becomes the evening's main event.
The screen
Size and positioning create immersion.
When the image fills the golfer's field of view, the experience stops feeling like hitting into a screen and starts feeling much closer to playing a hole.
Lighting
This is one of the most overlooked elements.
A simulator needs enough light for people to move, socialize and see the ball clearly without washing out the projected image.
That balance changes the entire atmosphere of a bay.
Acoustics
Golf balls are loud.
So are groups of people enjoying themselves.
Without proper acoustic treatment, eight active bays can quickly turn into noise rather than energy.
Materials on walls and ceilings therefore do more than decorate the room. They shape how it feels.
Seating
The golfer may be standing.
Everyone else isn't.
Comfortable seating turns a simulator into a social experience and makes a three-hour round enjoyable even when only one person is swinging.
Hospitality
And then comes the part no launch monitor measures.
The drink.
The conversation.
The music.
The lighting.
The people.
A perfect golf bay isn't merely somewhere you hit golf balls.
It's somewhere you want to spend time.
