Practice With Purpose

There is a version of practice that feels productive and changes nothing. A bucket of balls, the same club, the same target, a rhythm that becomes pleasant somewhere around ball thirty. It is enjoyable. It is not improvement.

The difference between the two comes down to three things.

A question, not a quantity

Useful practice begins with something you are trying to find out. How far does the wedge actually carry when you take a little off it? Does the miss move left under a faster tempo? What happens to the strike when the ball is back in the stance?

A session with a question has a beginning and an end. A session with a target number of balls only has an end.

Feedback close to the swing

Learning depends on the gap between an action and the information about it. On a range in fading light, that gap is wide and full of guesswork. Indoors, with accurate capture, it is immediate and specific.

That immediacy is worth more than any single number. It lets you test a change across ten balls rather than ten weeks.

• Work in small blocks with one variable at a time
• Change targets often enough to keep the task real
• Finish with something that has consequence, even a single shot that must be struck well

Environment, which nobody counts

The least discussed variable is the room. Practice happens or it does not, and whether it happens has a great deal to do with whether the place is somewhere you want to be.

Comfortable light. Sound that does not fatigue. A seat to think in between sets. Somewhere to go afterward. These are not luxuries added to practice; they are the reason practice becomes a habit instead of an intention.

The best practice plan is the one you keep returning to.
