A Golf Weekend in Atlanta

A golf weekend has one common failure mode: too much golf. The itinerary looks excellent on paper, and by Sunday afternoon nobody is speaking.

Here is a more sustainable way to plan one in Atlanta.

When to come

Late March through mid-May, or mid-September through early November. These windows offer the best conditions and the most pleasant evenings.

Avoid mid-July and August unless the group is content to tee off at dawn and be finished by eleven. Winter is possible but the daylight makes a two-round day difficult.

The shape of the weekend

Friday evening. Arrive without golf. A relaxed dinner and an early night sets up the weekend better than a rushed nine holes.

Saturday morning. The main round, early. Morning tee times give better conditions, faster pace, and the whole afternoon back.

Saturday afternoon. Deliberately unstructured. Some groups will want a short practice session or something indoors and social. Others will want to do nothing at all. Both are correct.

Saturday evening. The centerpiece. This is what people remember, and it is worth more planning than the second round would have been.

Sunday morning. A second round, or an easier alternative for anyone who has had enough.

Where to base yourself

The metro area is large and traffic is unforgiving, so choose a base near where you intend to play rather than near the airport or downtown.

The northern suburbs, Marietta and East Cobb among them, work well for groups: reasonable access to a range of courses, good places to eat, and considerably less time spent in the car than a downtown base.

The evening matters most

The consistent finding across every golf trip is that the rounds blur and the evenings do not. A good dinner where the group can hear each other, without a hard finish time, is what people describe afterwards.

Budget accordingly. Spending more on Saturday night and less on the second round is almost always the better trade.

Between rounds

Indoor golf is a useful afternoon option, particularly if the weather turns. Two hours in a private setting, low stakes, food and drink to hand, and no requirement for anyone to walk another four miles.
